The Cost of Hope

Some students need the focus and attention a tutor provides, while really bright, self-motivated students with solid fundamental skills can do great studying on their own. If your child is one of the former, a great tutor does not have to be prohibitively expensive. Many excellent tutors have sliding scales and are willing to be flexible if a student is enthusiastic and in need of financial aid.

Bottom line: you never know about a price accommodation unless you ask (but don’t ask for a discount unless you really need it and are willing to put in the effort and do your part too).

The College Board study finding minimal score gains from test prep did distinguish between types of test preparation, pointing out that students who’d had “coaching” showed the largest gains. The authors made the point, though, that not all coaching is created equal: quality makes a difference.

So how much will a good SAT coach cost you?

I’ve seen prices vary from $15 to well over $900 (yes, that’s per hour). So don’t assume that finding a great tutor is insurmountable or exorbitant. Often, what is required is simply adding a little elbow grease to the hunt and the willingness to ask.
